Senior Traditions
As each new school starts its year, my Facebook feed is filled with parents posting photos of children off to their first day of school. For most of my friends, these are the last first days. These are also some of the first signs of the upcoming bombardment of photos. Sentimental photos of senior portraits, senior pranks, senior prom, and finally, graduation. Now many may think, “This is where those poor homeschoolers miss out.” I am here to tell you there is no way I will be missing these traditions. To the contrary, I plan to make the most of them in the innovative ways that characterize the world of nontraditional schooling.
For years, I had imagined how senior year would be. Who I would put on my senior page, what would be my senior superlative, how I would spend senior ditch day. I had no idea I would throw over my entire schooling system and risk losing these traditions.
But, I have discovered that a fun aspect of homeschooling is all the laughs we share about how I can innovate the traditions of traditional schooling. Now, I realize these jokes have reality in them.
I CAN in fact take photos with my laptop for senior portraits. My graduation robe CAN be whatever color I want (or even a onsie instead). I CAN be both valedictorian and the school slacker. So you can bet that I will be doing all this and more.
The world of nontraditional schooling presents all sorts of possibilities. And that is really what this whole school adventure is about.
